VIDEO IS BACK! (Just in time)

197-pound Championship match - Jake Varner (ISU) dec. Craig Brester (NU) 5-2

Sorry folks, no live analysis. It came back at about 0:50 left in the third period of Varner’s match.

————————————————–

I’m abandoning the video. It’s annoying me.

Anyways, in the 184-pound match, OSU’s Clayton Foster recorded a 10-6 decision over Missouri’s Maxwell Askren to secure the conference title for the Cowboys, who have accumulated 70.5 points. Iowa State, if they were to win their final two matches, would be 1.5 points short of tying Oklahoma State, giving the outright conference title to the Cowboys.

And I can’t provide live play-by-play analysis of the final two matches, but I will post the scores to finish off this little dealio.

Again, sorry for the technical difficulties. If it were up to me, the video would be working and we’d all be able to be graced with the presence of my live updates. But thus is life: unfair, but forgivable.

————————————————–

Something terrible just happened, folks.

The streaming video closed out on me and is not letting me access it. No, if you haven’t figured out by now, I am not in Norman right now, I was unable to make the trip.

Anyways, we are experiencing some technical difficulties as we speak. And although I may not be able to recover from said difficulties in time to watch Varner’s match against Brester, I’ll put my woes aside to give you the scoop on what’s happening at the tournament.

Oklahoma State is leading the team scoring with 67.5 points, with Oklahoma in second with 64 points, with Iowa State in third with 63 points. Oklahoma is done for the night so the Cyclones only need one victory to leapfrog to second place. Oklahoma State has two more wrestlers in the finals - Clayton Foster (184) and Jared Rosholt (Hwt) - as does Iowa State with Varner (197) and David Zabriskie (Hwt). It will most likely come down to Zabriskie’s match with Rosholt, with a victory by Varner to make it easier for Iowa State to make a last-second switch back to the top of the pack. However, this may seem rather unlikely, but is still in the question.

Anyways, I’m going to work on getting the video working again, so hang tight, kiddies.

Third period - Marable quickly escapes to tie score at 4-4. Quick moves by Marable gets him a takedown followed by a quick escape by Reader to notch the score at 6-5 in Marable’s favor. Third period - Long chooses neutral position, plan backfires as Patterson fires and almost scores a takedown. Patterson digs in for a 5-2 lead, making Long’s decision at the beginning of the period look even more foolish. Long escapes, frustratingly fails to notch late takedown.

Calhoun’s Keys to the Tournament
1. The Best of the Best - ISU’s Jake Varner, the reigning national champion and top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, will be putting his 24-0 record on the line with a possible rematch against his archrival, Nebraska’s Craig Brester. Varner defeated Brester by a sudden victory decision of 6-4 in the season-finale dual meet, improving his all-time record to 4-1 against his Nebraska foe. Brester’s only victory against Varner came in last year’s Big 12 Championships, where Brester notched a 4-3 decision to win the Big 12 conference title and earn the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
2. Going Long - Redshirt freshman Andrew Long is carrying a perfect 3-0 conference record into the Big 12’s, defeating the No. 2-4 seeds by a decision, technical fall, and fall, respectively. Long has yet to wrestle Missouri’s Eric Wilson, since he was given the week off when Missouri came to Ames for their regularly-scheduled dual meet, where Trevor Dearden stepped in in Long’s place.
3. The “sleeper” closes in on 100 career wins - Senior Nick Fanthorpe is poised become the 35th wrestler in Cyclone history reach the 100-win mark for his career, sitting just three wins away from the astonishing feat with a career record of 97-29. Earlier this season, Jake Varner and David Zabriskie became the 33rd and 34th wrestlers to achieve the feat, respectively. Varner’s career record is currently 114-10 and Zabriskie’s career record is 109-22.
4. “Beast of the East” goes for 3 conference titles - Senior heavyweight David Zabriskie is closing in on his third conference title, earning his first two in 2007 and 2009. Last year, Zabriskie beat the would-be national champion Mark Ellis by a decision of 3-1 to win his second conference title and earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. In 2007 during his redshirt freshman season, he beat the current top-ranked heavyweight, Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State, by a decision of 3-2 to win his first conference title.

————————————————–

The Iowa State Cyclones (13-2, 4-0 Big 12) are down in Norman, Okla., today for the 2010 Big 12 Championships. The second-ranked Cyclones have won three straight Big 12 titles, the longest streak since Oklahoma State’s run from 2003-’06. However, Iowa State tied Nebraska last season with 70 points apiece, splitting the conference title between the two. The tournament is set to begin at 11 a.m. CST.
