Iowa State vs. Colorado - In-Game updates
By Kayci Woodley — Daily Staff Writer
Cyclones get the win on senior day 59-41.
Another breakaway layup by Stuckey to round out the scoring for Iowa State.
Lacey remains on the bench with a smile, congratulating her teammates as they come out.
Stuckey takes it from the top of the key and drives into the lane for her own bucket, shining on senior day as Fennelly pulls the other seniors off the bench for the last minute.
The energy is rising in Hilton as the team breaks from the huddle with several players grinning from ear to ear.
Stuckey comes up with a steal and as she’s dribbling down with a grin, dishes off to Prins at the last second for the layup. Cyclones are now up 55-41 and Stuckey is having a solid performance on her senior night.
Bolte is money again from beyond the arc and Lacey cracks a smile from the bench as her teammate drains the bucket.
Colorado loses track of the shot clock and is unable to get any type of shot off after that one. Cyclones still up 5041 with just over three minutes to play.
Prins draws the foul with 4:22 to play and hits both free throws, Cyclones up 50-41.
Bolte grabs the other four players on the court for a huddle before Stuckey shoots her free throw. Bolte has been the leader on the floor today, due to Lacey’s absence.
Williams finds Poppens open under the basket for a layup with just 7:27 to go in the game.
The crowd in Hilton goes nuts after another questionable call was made. The crowd’s volume may have accounted for the missed free throw by Colorado that followed.
Colorado is forced to call a timeout after Bolte’s trey was followed by an open layup by Poppens to extend the Iowa State lead to 10 points.
Bolte hits another three and Lacey is out of her seat in celebration as the free t-shirts go flying from the hands of Cyclone alley members.
Cyclones up 40-34 with 11:44 to play in the game. Colorado’s Alyssa Fressle at the line for the Buffs.
Poppens drives baseline and is bumped up all the way by a Colorado defender, but puts the ball in the basket with a reverse layup.
Sophomore guard Whitney Williams steps up to the arc and hits a trey with just five seconds left on the shot clock. The bucket extends the Iowa State lead 38-30.
A slow offensive possession for Iowa State ends with a wide open layup by freshman post Chelsea Poppens. The Cyclones are struggling to get in an offensive groove without Lacey on the court.
To open up the half, Prins drills a bucket from beyond the arc, putting the Cyclones up 31-24.
After the first half, Bolte leads Iowa State with 13 points and Spears leads Colorado with eight. The Cyclones out rebounded Colorado in the first half 20-18. From the field, Iowa State shot 35.7 percent and Colorado shot just 28.6.
Out of nowhere Colorado’s Brittany Spears comes up with two big plays for the Buffs before halftime. A no-look bucket followed by a steal puts Colorado within four heading into the locker room.
Bolte nails a three from the right side of the arc to put Iowa State up by eight points with 2:10 to play. Most of Bolte’s threes have been in and out today, but she found the bottom of the net on that one.
A slow first half here in Hilton, but Iowa State still leads 25-18 with 3:37 to go in the half.
Cyclone fans are pumpin’ the pasta in Hilton during the third media timeout of the night. THe Cyclones lead 24-15, and it’s Colorado ball after a questionable traveling call was made on Iowa State’s Amanda Zimmerman.
Another media timeout at 11:18, and Bolte leads the Cyclones with eight points.
Freshman post Anna Prins scores in the paint at 11:50 to put Iowa State up 18-12.
Meagan Malcolm-Peck drains a three for the Buffs to bring them within three with just over 13 minutes to play in the half.
Another three in Hilton as Whitney Williams drains one from beyond the arc, Cyclones up 11-7.
A media timeout at 15:33 gives Fennelly a chance to regroup the Cyclones. Iowa State is up 6-5.
Another standing ovation at Hilton Coliseum, as three of the seniors — Genesis Lightbourne, Anna Florzak and Shellie Mosman are subbed out of the game.
Junior Kelsey Bolte puts the first points on the board for Iowa State with a trey from the left side at 16:40.
Lacey is subbed out at the 19:58 mark, and receives what may have been the earliest standing ovation in the history of women’s basketball.
All five seniors will start today for Iowa State, including Lacey.
Lacey has made her way to the court for a team huddle prior to the announcement of starting lineups.
Alison Lacey is not warming up with the rest of the team, but is in the building. As the senior entered Hilton, the fans gave her a well-deserved applause.
Five minutes until game time and the upper deck is filling up in Hilton on this senior day.
WBB: No. 13/15 ISU vs. Kansas State
FINAL - Iowa State 48, Kansas State 39
The Cyclones made 11 of 12 free throws in the second half, including 9 of 10 down the stretch to help wrap up a close 48-39 win over the Wildcats. Iowa State improve to 21-5overall and 10-4 in Big 12 play, tied with Oklahoma for the second spot in the conference. Kansas State drops to 12-16 overall and 4-10 in the Big 12.
SECOND HALF
0:38: The foul fest has begun. With just under 50 seconds to play Kansas State sent Kelsey Bolte to the line for 2 shots, and the junior converted on both. After a foul on Poppens, the Wildcats have a fresh 30, down 47-39, and have just called another timeout.
0:57: Poppens continues to come up huge for the Cyclones again and again in this game. After Lacey missed her 14th basket of the game on a runner she hits 95% of the time, Poppens fights through two purple jerseys to grab the offensive rebound and put it back in for 2. She leads all players with 18 points in the game. However, Chambers for the Wildcats responded yet again, hitting a monster 3-pointer on the next possession. It’s 45-39, timeout Kansas State.
1:37: The two teams continue to trade 2 points on each end of the floor, as Sweat puts in 2 for the WIldcats, followed by 2 from Prins for Iowa State. That trend may be reversed soon, as Stuckey just came up with a huge steal for the Cyclones on an incredibly athletic play. There’s a timeout on the floor, it’s 43-36 Iowa State, which has possession out of the break.
2:29: Kansas State cuts the lead to 5 with a little under three to play after Karr hit a 20-foot jumper with her foot on the three-point line. Iowa State is fouled, and once again converts. Poppens hits both, and its 41-34 ISU.
3:36: As I said earlier, there’s a good chance free throws may be the difference in this game, and Iowa State is taking advantage of that so far. Two of their best free throw shooters, Lacey and Prins, each connected on both of their 1 and 1 opportunities after K-State’s first two fouls in the bonus. At the final media timeout it’s 39-32 Iowa State, which has committed only 3 fouls in the second half.
4:37: Alison Lacey can’t buy a basket right now. The senior sharpshooter is just 3-16 from the floor in the game after having a routine layup roll out. Kansas State cut the lead to 3 after a trey from Chambers, but Iowa State responded with a Poppens lay in. On a different note, Poppens continues to amaze me with her defensive abilities. She just took her 3rd charge of the game, and seems to do so in just about every game this year. She is tough as nails. It’s 37-32 Iowa State.
7:50: The first field goal of the half for Iowa State finally comes with 9 minutes left in the game. Poppens made a great post move on Branshea Brown after a great hustle play for a steal by Stuckey. She has all 5 of ISU’s points this half. Kansas State continues to claw back into the game, and the score is 33-29 at the third media timeout. A big factor in this game is going to be the fouls, as the Cyclones are already in the bonus after Lacey was fouled just prior to the timeout. She will be at the line for a 1 and 1 after the break.
11:59: The Cyclones have had a rough go of it on offense in the second half, scoring only three points in the first 8 minutes of the half. All three points were free throws by Poppens. Luckily for the Cyclones, Kansas State has also had some offensive shortcomings, but have still cut the lead to 7 points at 31-24.
HALFTIME - Iowa State 28, Kansas Stat17
We’re at the break at Hilton after Iowa State went on an 8-0 run in the closing minutes of the half. Jessica Schroll has done a great job off the bench in place of Poppens to play tough defense on Sweat, limiting her effectiveness for the Wildcats. The K-State senior hasn’t scored since the 8 in a row she had earlier. Alison Lacey may sit for a few minutes to start the 2nd half, as she was whistled for 2 fouls in the final 1:16 of the first half.
Here’s the halftime stat leaders:
Points: Bolte/Poppens 7, Lacey 6
Assists: Prins 4
Rebounds: Lacey 3
Team Stats:
Shooting %: Iowa State 42.9 (12-28), Kansas State 30.4 (7-23)
3 point FG:% Iowa State 16.7 (1-6), Kansas State 27.3 (3-11)
Rebounds: Iowa State 21, Kansas State 12
Turnovers: Iowa State 3, Kansas State 5
FIRST HALF
3:55: We’re at the final media timeout of the first half and the Cyclones are leading 22-17. The ISU defense just can’t seem to get a timely stop, as Kansas State continues to keep the lead small. However, Iowa State has had an answer for just about every little run the Wildcats have gone on.
7:43: Chelsea Poppens just continues to impress me more and more every game. After Amanda Zimmerman missed in easy layup, Poppens grabbed the offensive board, fought through a triple team, and laid it in for her 7th point of the night, a team high. Timeout Kansas State, it’s 20-13 Cyclones.
11:11: For some reason, Iowa State just can’t stop Ashley Sweat. The K-State senior killed the Cyclones with 31 points in their first meeting of the year, and just scored 8 unanswered points in this game. But Iowa State responded, and the second media timeout ISU still leads 14-10.
15:56: The Cyclones have continued their hot start, connecting on 4 of their first 6 shots while the Wildcats are just 1 for 5. At the first media timeout it’s 9-2 Iowa State.
17:43: Well that didn’t take long. Coming into the game Kelsey Bolte needed just 5 points to become the 22nd Cyclone player to reach 1,000 for their career. It’s 5-2 Iowa State, and you’ll never guess who made both baskets for the Cyclones.
PREGAME
We’re about 15 minutes from tip off at Hilton Coliseum between Iowa State and Kansas State. The Cyclones are on a mission to avenge a surprising 73-67 upset victory by the Wildcats in late January. The starting lineups are set, with the usual five on the card for the Cyclones.

Lacey chosen as finalist for Lieberman Award
By Kayci Woodley - Daily Staff Writer
Iowa State’s senior point guard Alison Lacey has been named one of eight finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award. The award honors the nation’s top point guards in Division I women’s basketball. Lieberman is a Hall of Famer and was a 3-time All-American at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Lieberman led the Monarchs to two back-to-back national championships and a WNIT championship in her career from 1976-1980.
“I think anyone who has followed the game over any length of time knows Nancy Lieberman’s name,” said coach Bill Fennelly. “So to be associated with her name in any way shape or form is truly something special.”
Lacey has displayed characteristics worthy of the Liberman award through her leadership on and off the court for Iowa State this season. Lacey is averaging 17.3 points per game this season and recently became the first play in Iowa State history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in a career.
The Australian import’s assist-to-turnover ratio has been unfathomable throughout the season, as she has consistently led the nation in the category this year.
The Cyclones sit at 20-5 overall this season with Lacey at the helm and the senior leader has posted double figures in points in all but one game this season. Lacey also posted a triple-double against Iowa early in the season, becoming just the second player to do so in school history.
“She’s had a phenomenal year,” Fennelly said. I don’t think there’s a point guard that’s had a better year physically and at the same time has impacted a team that’s needed it so much as [Alison Lacey] has done for our team.”
Three finalists for the Lieberman award will be chosen from the list of eight, with a winner announced in April. Requirements for the award include leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills which were displayed by Lieberman throughout her basketball career. Among the eight finalists are two other Big 12 players — Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma and Andrea Riley of Oklahoma State. Nadirah McKenith (St. John’s), Samantha Prahalis (Ohio State), Sam Quigley (DePaul), Jasmine Thomas (Duke) and Courtney Vandersloot (Gonzaga) are the other finalists for the honor.
“Any time you’re on a list of national awards, or a possble national award is a great thing,” Fennelly said. She’s on a very elite list and certainly deserves to be there.”
No. 13 ISU WBB vs. Missouri
SECOND HALF
0:00: The Cyclones managed to hold a double-digit lead for the entire second half, and left Hilton with a 55-42 win. Full stories can be found at www.iowastatedaily.com
12:52: It’s been a slow second half, as only 14 points have been scored in the first 7 minutes since halftime. Poppens already has a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Iowa State leads 36-21.
HALFTIME
Also: Megan Taylor still looks 19 years old.
Iowa State statistics leaders:
Points: Lacey, Poppens 10

Assists: Lacey 4, Stuckey 3
FIRST HALF
0:00: Through 20 minutes of basketball it’s Iowa State 30, Missouri 12. Halftime stats posted shortly.
3:04: More of the same for the Cyclones until senior Alison Lacey dropped six in a row, including one of her vintage 23-footers from the wing to bump Iowa State’s lead to 16. At the fourth and final media timeout of the first half, it’s 26-10 Cyclones.
7:16: The last four minutes of basketball weren’t pretty for Iowa State, as their reserves accounted for countless turnovers in just a short period, and the Cyclone lead has been cut to 20-10 at the third media timeout.
11:49: The onslaught continues for Iowa State, who ended up going on an 18-2 run to begin the game. 14 of those 18 points were scored by freshman, 10 coming from Poppens. We’re at the second media timeout and Iowa State now leads 18-4.
15:45: Apparently there’s something about Missouri that really gets Chelsea Poppens going. After outscoring the Tigers in the first half of their game in Columbia earlier this season, Poppens scored the first 6 points of the game for the Cyclones tonight. At the first media timeout it’s been all Iowa State, which leads 8-2.
PREGAME
We’re just about 5 minutes away from tip off as the Cyclones are preparing to honor the program’s all-time leading scorer Angie Welle. Her number 32 is about to be immortalized in the rafters of Hilton Coliseum, as she will be just the fourth women’s basketball player to have her number retired at Iowa State.

FINAL - Iowa State 69, Baylor 45
SECOND HALF
0:00: We have a final at Hilton. Be sure to check back at www.iowastatedaily.com shortly for a full recap on the game.
3:38: Baylor has cut the lead back under 30, but Iowa State still leads 63-39 at the final media timeout of the game. The Cyclones are 16-32 from the three-point line in the game.
6:12: We’re at the third media timeout of the second half, and it’s been more of the same for the Cyclones. They’re two three-pointers shy of the single-game school record of 18, set last season against Detroit. Alison Lacey has notched her 7th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 assists to go with 5 rebounds. Zimmerman leads the way with 15 points, along with 14 for Bolte and 13 for Prins. Poppens leads the game with 13 rebounds.
11:48: This game is just getting stupid. Iowa State has knocked down another three-pointer to run their total to 14 for the game. Baylor is just helpless against Iowa State’s quick, smart, and athletic offense. We still have just under 12 minutes to play after the 2nd media timeout, and the Cyclones lead the No. 15 Bears 53-24.
14:40: Just like the first half, Prins knocks down a three-pointer to kick off the scoring for the Cyclones. Greiner finally got her first good move and look at the basket, but Iowa State answered with 3-pointers from Williams and Lacey to extend the lead to 26 points, their largest of the game. At the first media timeout, it’s 48-22 Iowa State.
20:00: We’ve got the starters back on the floor to start the second half, and the initial possession goes to Baylor.
HALFTIME ANALYSIS
Iowa State’s ability to hit the three-pointer has carried the team’s offense for the past decade, and today has been no different. The Cyclones are 10-20 fro beyond the arc so far. Due to Greiner’s presence in the middle and desire to float in the paint, Iowa State has successfully taken advantage of the Baylor defense by setting off-ball screens to get their guards open looks. To emphasize the success of off-ball screens, the Cyclones have 14 assists on all 14 buckets in this half. Even 6′6” center Anna Prins has knocked down two shots from outside over the outstretched Greiner, who has yet to come out of the paint for help defense on the perimeter.
Defensively, the Cyclones are using a zone of their own to force shots from Baylor from outside the paint. The Bears have relied on points in the paint as their bread and butter this season, scoring only 6 paint points in the first half (ISU also had 6). Help defense down low on Greiner by Poppens has really allowed Prins to successfully shut down the 6′9” phenom. It should be interesting to see what changes Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has in store for the second half.
HALFTIME LEADERS - Iowa State
Points: Prins 10, Bolte 9, Lacey/Zimmerman 8
Rebounds: Poppens 6, Bolte 4
Assists: Lacey, 8
3-point shooting: Bolte 3-6, Lacey/Zimmerman 2-3, Prins 2-4
FIRST HALF
0:00: A sluggish last few minutes for both team results in a 38-18 halftime score. The Cyclones ran Whitney Williams off of a screen for an open 3-point attempt, which she knocked down on the final play of the half. What an incredible 20 minutes of basketball for Iowa State.
3:50: A bit of cold shooting (relative to earlier in the half) has slowed the Cyclones offensively, but the defensive effort has been fantastic. A tough zone has limited open looks for Baylor, and Poppens just took her 2nd charge of the game. Greiner, last week’s Big 12 Player of the Week, has been limited to just 1-4 from the floor, scoring 4 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. ISU is 9-16 from beyond the arc, and it’s 35-14 Cyclones at the final media timeout of the first half.
7:43: This is as close as real life gets to Pleasntville. Iowa State has cashed 7 of 11 three-point attempts in the first 12 minutes of this game, including four from post players. The Cyclones are also outrebounding Baylor 14-8 and are shooting 11-20 from the floor (55%). It’s 29-12 Iowa State at the third media timeout.
11:20: We’re at our second media timeout, and the Cyclones have cooled off a bit, but a 5-6 start from 3-point land has Iowa State up 23-10 on Baylor. Prins leads the way with 10, and Poppens has already grabbed 4 rebounds. Brittany Greiner is still scoreless for the Bears.
15:43: Iowa State could not have asked for a better start in this one. In the first four minutes 6′6” center Anna Prins has found her way around Greiner, scoring twice from behind the 3-point line and once around the bucket to lead the Cyclones with 8 points. It’s 13-2 Iowa State at the first media timeout.
Success so far: Anna Prins just faced Brittany Greiner, pulling up and draining a 3-pointer over the Baylor center. It’s already 8-2 Cyclones after another 3, this one from Bolte.
This just in: Brittany Greiner is tall. The 6′9” freshman will be patrolling the paint for Baylor today, and will certainly be a tough matchup for the Cyclones.

SECOND HALF
Lacey hit a three to open the second half, running her total of consecutive points scored to 9. With 15:45 left to go in the game, the Cyclones own a 41-29 advantage.
The Lady Raiders went on a bit of a run as a result of a few Cyclone turnovers, closing the Iowa State lead to 9 at 46-37 with 11:42 remaining. Bolte is still pacing the Cyclones with 16 points, followed by Lacey with 9 and Stuckey with 7. Iowa State continues to dominate Tech on the boards, holding a 28-15 rebounding advantage to again help make up for their 15 turnovers.
With 7:35 to go, Iowa State still hold a double-digit lead at 50-39. Bolt has hit her 5th three-pointer in seven chances to lead all scorers with 19 points. HALFTIME AROUND THE BIG 12
A few surprises and noteworthy games going on around the Big 12. There are six WBB games featuring top 25 teams around the nation tonight, five of which are Big 12 games.
No. 4 Nebraska 51, No. 11 Oklahoma State 27 HALF

FIRST HALF
The Cyclones are hot early, hitting two of their first three 3-point attempts (both from Bolte). However, Tech had answers to each, knocking down two treys of their own. 8-6 Iowa State at the first media timeout (15:18).
Second media timeout at 11:42, and the Cyclones are having a bit of trouble on defense, giving the Lady Raiders several easy looks at the basket. Five of the game’s first nine field goals have come from long distance. It’s 13-12 TTU, as Bolte still leads the way with 6, Poppens follows with 4.
Tech keeps answering every Iowa State bucket to make for a see-saw first 12 minutes. Rebounds are keeping the Cyclones ahead, as they have a sizeable 14-8 lead on the glass to make up for six early turnovers. At the 8:00 media timeout, it’s 19-17 Cyclones. Bolte has 8, Poppens 6, and Lacey leads the way with 5 rebounds. (7:18)
The final media timeout of the half has the Cyclones up 23-22. Bolte is already in double figures with 10, while Alison Lacey remains scoreless but has 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Iowa State is shooting just 38.9% from the floor, but they are holding Tech just below that mark at 37.5%. (3:57)
Iowa State pulls out of their scoring funk in which they went without a FG for over five minutes. Cole, Stuckey, and Prins made five of six free throws, to go along with Bolte’s third 3 and a layup after an offensive rebound by Lacey (her first points of the game). Lacey scored the Cyclones’ final six points of the half to lead them on a 14-2 run to close out the period. ISU leads at the break by a score of 35-24.

The ISU women’s basketball team jumped into the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday. The Cyclones are now ranked No. 22 after coming up with victories over two Big 12 opponents last week. After its first conference victory over Colorado on the road, Iowa State has bounced back offensively.
The first win for Iowa State came over Kansas last Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum, where the Cyclones were able to shut down the Jayhawks’ leader Danielle McCray to a low six points. Iowa State then traveled to Austin to face the Longhorns, coming out on top in an overtime battle. Big plays made by the Cyclones late in regulation and in overtime fueled Iowa State to a conference victory over then-No. 20 Texas.
Zimmerman earns Big 12 honor
Freshman post Amanda Zimmerman was chosen as the Big 12’s Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon. In Iowa State’s overtime victory over Texas last Saturday, Zimmerman was a main contributor. The Huxley native posted 14 points and five rebounds for Iowa State. Zimmerman’s offensive rebound in overtime after a missed shot was a key in the Cyclones’ victory as the freshman dished it off to senior point guard Alison Lacey, who hit the three to put the game into overtime.
“I thought [Zimmerman] did a lot of really good things in a pretty pressured situation,” said coach Bill Fennelly in Monday’s press conference. “No doubt that’s a game, I think, hopefully she’ll see it as a start point for what could be a really good run.”
In Iowa State’s victory over Kansas, Zimmerman compiled seven points. The freshman is averaging 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds this season after getting off to a slow start with an ankle injury.
No. 23 Cyclones defeat Colorado, 68-62
For the third straight year, Iowa State has defeated Colorado in Boulder.
Saturday’s 68-62 victory marked Iowa State’s first conference win and 13th win overall.
Senior guard Alison Lacey scored a season high 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds, leading the Cyclones in scoring for the ninth time this season.
Junior guard Kelsey Bolte seemed to get out of her recent shooting slump and scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting.
Colorado’s Brittany Spears had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Despite only shooting 2-12 from the field, the junior forward was still able to score 14 points making 10-12 free throws.
The Buffaloes had two other players in score in double figures, guards Chucky Jeffery and Bianca Smith. The duo combined for 30 points and together shot 50% from the field.
