Coaching change causes Ejim to have second thoughts
The departure of coach Greg McDermott has caused a feeling of uncertainty for not only the current ISU players, but the incoming recruiting class as well.
Iowa State’s highest rated of prospect in this year’s recruiting class, 6-foot-10 forward Melvin Ejim, is suddenly questioning his prior commitment to the Cyclones.
Ejim, who was the 2010 New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year, was recruited aggressively this past year by ISU assitant coach T.J. Otzieberger.
“T.J. was one of the main reasons I wanted to go there. So not knowing who the head coach is kinda makes me have second thoughts,” Ejim said in a phone call with the Iowa State Daily Monday evening. “But if T.J. is the new head coach or is there, I’ll be there. But if not I may have to open my recruitment again.”
Since McDermott’s announcement Monday afternoon Ejim said he has talked with Otzieberger and several other members of the team, but had not spoken with McDermott or athletic director Jamie Pollard.
Ejim said he will wait and see what happens with the coaching staff in the next few days and will talk with his family before making any decisions.
ESPN gave Ejim a grade of 90 out of a 100 on its men’s basketball recruiting site, stating “He has long arms, outstanding athleticism, and the overall length to become an outstanding defender at the next level.”
Prior to signing with the Cyclones, Ejim said he was recruited by Butler, Virginia, Boston College and several Ivy League schools.
Iowa State’s other two recruits, freshman forward Jordan Railey and guard DeMarcus Phillips, have yet to be reached for comment.
The Cyclones They Are a-Changin’
Chris Cuellar - Daily Staff Writer
Friday, March 12, 2010
—————————————————————————
Jamie Pollard announced Monday that coach Greg McDermott would be returning. It’s a good thing that the AD settled down Cyclone fans with that statement of solidarity. That’s about all that isn’t changing for next year’s team.
Fans wanted the CBI? They got it. Craig Brackins Is Gone.
Iowa State’s Athletic Department sent out the press release Friday at 2:48. The Friday before Spring Break began. Interview opportunities with those departing or their coaches? Not a chance. Brackins is in Kansas City cheering on the women’s team, Hamilton’s “quote” was as good as I’ve ever seen from the big man, and Buckley was relegated to background noise with the likes of Clinton Mann and Cameron Lee. Even McDermott is “unreachable” — attending the state tournament for his son and taking a break from basketball related affairs.
The Sukup building was a closed shop this afternoon. I tried the doors. I tried the phones. The Cyclones may as well have made this announcement like the Baltimore Colts. Maybe the internet can help us figure out what happened. Twitter it is.
@Craig21Brackins: “The start of a new beginning!!! I will not settle 4 less…only more!!! I LOVE STATE!!!”
Let’s tally up 2009-2010:
L.A. Pomlee- Released from team over Winter Break.
Jamie Vanderbeken- Returning(?) but out for season in December with nagging foot injuries.
Chris Colvin- Suspended following Duke game for as long as it took for…(see directly below).
Lucca Staiger- Leading three point shooter leaves in middle of week for German professional contract. How’s that working out for you? http://bit.ly/c0SXRJ
Charles Boozer- Taking on the peak in minutes in his career after Staiger departed, Boozer tears ACL in conference game, just 3 days after scoring career high 19 points. Immediately becomes the most well dressed player on bench, albeit with an immobilizer.
LaRon Dendy- McDermott instigated suspension for missing almost two weeks from Ames for a funeral, and not communicating with team during his layoff.
Marquis Gilstrap- NCAA appeal for an extra year denied, medical history not long enough, and deprives Cyclones of 14.9 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
Craig Brackins- Cyclones leader in every way takes off like most people expected. Don’t groan too loud, it’ll drown out the “I told you so” that you’ll undoubtedly be giving your friends over break.
Dominique Buckley- Reserve player that was truly the fourth of four point guards healthy at the end of the year. With incoming DeMarcus Phillips (6′2″) and Bubu Palo coming off of a redshirt year, Buckley wasn’t going to pick up minutes.
Justin Hamilton- Starting center that, while not a star, was a solid inside presence that Cyclones obviously needed more of late in the season.
Who leaves next?
Recruits Phillips, Melvin Ejim and Jordan Railey can’t be too excited that some major pieces will leave them exposed early on. Or, perhaps they will be excited at the prospect of getting playing time on a team that will look nothing like the package McDermott put on the floor in 2010.
Assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger was brought to Ames as the AAU coach responsible for getting Craig Brackins to commit and was instrumental in getting the big man to return. Does he follow his former meal ticket?
As you can probably intimate, there isn’t much in the way of continuity around the program. Brackins was the only leading scorer McDermott had returned in his four years. In year five, let’s speculate the starting lineup…
G: Diante Garrett - Senior - 9.7 ppg, 5.4 apg - 32 starts
G: Scott Christopherson - Junior - 7.9 ppg - 15 starts
F: Melvin Ejim - Freshman- 6′6″, 210 lbs. - Currently playing at Brewster Academy (N.H.)
F: LaRon Dendy - Senior - 7.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg - 1 start
F: Jamie Vanderbeken - Senior - 4.1 ppg - 10 games
Garrett showed at Kansas State he’s prepared to take on the leadership role, and he’s going to need to. The question remains, what the heck is going on in Ames?
Simply, change. Pollard announced McDermott was returning to some grumbles, and the team finished 15-17. A cursory look at the lineup implies that this team wouldn’t reach that in the ultra-top heavy Big 12.
The Cyclones, they are a-changin’. Are you buying tickets to the show?

In-Game Updates: Iowa State vs Missouri
End of Game: Iowa State 67 Missouri 69
Zaire Taylor, who has made nearly every clutch shot for the Tigers today, took the inbounds pass and sprinted down court, closely guarded by Gilstrap. He took a tough, pseudo-hook shoot that banked high off the back board and in.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 67 Missouri 67, 6.1
After Zaire Taylor tied the game back up, the Cyclones committed a key tournover on a missed pass from Christopherson to Brackins at the basket. Missouri will have the ball with a chance to win but must throw it in from under Iowa State’s basket.
————————————————————————————-
Iowa State 67 Missouri 65, 31:5
Gilstrap gave the Cyclones another lead on a drive to the basket.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 65 Missouri 65, 1:50
Of course the lead couldn’t grow past four points, so instead it shrank back to nothing. Unless somebody takes this game over, we may just have a second overtime.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 65 Missouri 61, 3:30
The Cyclones got of to a good start in the overtime period, scoring the first four points.
————————————————————————————–
End of Regulation: Iowa State 61 Missouri 61
This game has seemed to be headed for overtime all game long. The largest lead of the game thus far is still just four points. The Cyclones botched their last possession of the game, not even getting a shot of as Marquis Gilstrap got stripped as he went up for a three-point shot with a couple seconds left on the clock.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 61 Missouri 61, 17.5 seconds
Of course Missouri ties it up. Zaire Taylor hit a tough shot to put some pressure on the Cyclones who aill have their final possession coming up.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 61 Missouri 59, 33:3 seconds
Brackins hits a pair of free throws to give the Cyclones the lead. One possession left for the Tigers if they take the clock down.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 59 Missouri 59, 46.8 seconds
The sea-saw battle continues in Ames.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 59 Missouri 57, 1:12
The Cyclone faithful are on their feet and yelling at full throat. Although they have not been very loud all game. They are into it now. Especially after Marquis Gilstrap game the Cyclones another lead on a fast break layup.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 55 Missouri 55, 2:51
Missouri ties the game up yet again as Tiller hit one of his two free throws.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 55 Missouri 54, 4:14
Scott Christopherson has given the Cyclones a huge life in the last couple minutes. In addition to hitting two big three-pointers. He got another steal, igniting a fast break that ended in two Diante Garrett free throws, giving the Cyclones a narrow lead.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 50 Missouri 52, 6:12
Still neither team has been able to pull away. Although scoring isn’t quite as rare as it was in the first ten minutes of the half, they seem to be surging and struggling at the same time.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 44 Missouri 48, 9:01
Tiger guard Marcus Denmon has caught fire from three-point range hitting back-to-back threes. Although two in a row doesn’t seem like much, it is when you consider Iowa State is 0 for 9 and Missouri is now 4 for 16 from long range.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 41 Missouri 38, 12:02
Hilton Coliseum is on their feet, as Laron Dendy soared to the basket for a dunk, only to be pulled down by Keith Ramsey for a personal foul. It may be the loudest this crowd has been, both in indignation at the foul but jubilation at the call. Dendy made the first free throw and missed the second.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 40 Missouri 38, 12:10
Offensively, this game leaves something to be desired. In the last four minutes only 6 points have been scored.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 36 Missouri 36, 16:03
The second half is shaping up just like the first. Neither team can gain any breathing room at all as the biggest lead thus far has been 4 points. It has also started off slowly in the scoring department as both teams have just 5 points in the first 4 minutes of the half.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 34 Missouri 34, 17:10
The sloppy play has spilled over into the second half as Missouri has four turnovers and Iowa State has two already in the second half.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 34 Missouri 31, 19:21
Scott Christopherson showed up for the second half. He started the half with a steal and a jumper and on the next Tigers possession, he stole the ball again, getting fouled on the fast break, but missing the second free throw.
————————————————————————————–
Nothing like a little of Billy Idol’sMony Mony to get the crowd pumped up for the second half. The crowd is barley over half full however, and has been largely stoic through the first half.
————————————————————————————–
Halftime: Iowa State 31 Missouri 31
The Cyclones had the ball to end the half, but they couldn’t separate themselves going into the locker room as Gilstrap missed a three bring the teams total to 0 for 8. He then ran over and blocked a three-quarters court attempt by Michael Dixon.
Missouri’s fast style of play has translated to a little sloppy play by both teams. The Cyclones have 9 turnovers while Missouri has 7.
The first half was very clean as the teams combined for 8 fouls. The Tigers however, have both Laurence Bowers and Steve Moore in foul trouble with 2 apiece.
Both teams have shot the ball well (50 percent for Missouri and 43.3 percent for Iowa State) .
Iowa State is owning the boards with 19 to the Tigers 12.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 29 Missouri 27 , 1:30
The Cyclones struggles from three-point land continue. They are 0 for 8 at this point.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 27 Missouri 23, 3:35
The Cyclones have turned the tables on Missouri. After taking the lead, they have kept it, although the game has remained within 4 points. The Cyclones are doing most of their damage with their big men. Brackins and Dendy have combined for 18 points.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 18 Missouri 17, 7:45
Laron Dendy hit the deck on the last offensive possession, but after Craig Brackins got the steal, he was all alone. Dendy threw down a big one-handed dunk with his hand behind his head. The dunk got the Hilton crowd on their feet for the first time in the game. It also gave the Cyclones their first lead since the 18 min mark, although they have not trailed by more than 4 points all night.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 11 Missouri 13, 11:20
J.T. Tiller seems to be in the zone right now. He has scored 11 of the Tigers first 13 points, shooting 4 for 4, including 2 for 2 from the three-point line.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 6 Missouri 9, 14:37
The game has started out pretty evenly. Both teams seem to be feeling the other out. Have looked pretty good against the Tigers press thus far, although Missouri has gotten a steal and easy bucket as a result.
————————————————————————————–
Iowa State 0 Missouri 0 19:59
Iowa State wins the tip… off to a good start.
—————————————————————————-
Pregame
Missouri comes into Hilton Coliseum tied for third in the Big 12 with Baylor and Texas A&M. The Tigers feature a fast style of play along with a balanced scoring attack. They are led on offense by Kim English, who scores 14.4 points per game, but Laurence Bowers (10.2 ppg), J.T. Tiller (8.4 ppg), and Zaire Taylor (8.4 ppg). Defensively, the Tigers thrive on steals. Their 11.0 steals per game leads the Big 12 by more than 2.0 spg and would be a school record if they end the year at that rate.

—————————————————————————
Iowa State 78 - Nebraska 74 Final
——————————————————————————-
Iowa State 75 - Nebraska 71 14.9 2nd Half
Cyclones on the verge of putting away the Huskers. Strong finish to the game, and Nebraska just couldn’t do enough to put the ball in the hoop down the stretch.
Huskers staying around…
—————————————————————————-
Iowa State 67 - Nebraska 65 3:22 2nd Half
The Cyclones are working the floor, Nebraska is staying within striking distance, and this thing has the makings of a down to the wire finish. Brackins has sprung out of a cannon in the last few minutes, and now has 17 points and 9 boards.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 63 - Nebraska 62 4:45 2nd Half
Some great programming for the Hilton audience, “The Craig Brackins Show” decided to start on time delay. Crowd is on their feet for the junior who knocked down a couple big shots to give the Cyclones the lead back.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 53 - Nebraska 55 8:24 2nd Half
Cyclones have put up 10 points in the six minutes that Craig Brackins was out. Good thing the opponent is still Nebraska.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 46 - Nebraska 49 12:34 2nd Half
Loudest crowd has been tonight, and it was after the first bucket in over two minutes by either team. Blown calls, fans clamoring for fouls, this thing has everything but efficient basketball.
FG: ISU- 43%, NU- 43%
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 43 - Nebraska 49 14:45 2nd Half
The YMCA seems to have inspired the children around Hilton Coliseum more than the basketball. Cyclones still definitely within striking distance, and Mac has time to turn this thing around somehow. Even the bench looks despondent.
Standhardinger’s previous career high was 14 points. He averages 6 points and 3 rebounds per contest. Against Iowa State, the freshman has put up 18 and 6.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 39 - Nebraska 47 15:39 2nd Half
Christian Standhardinger has 18 points. Who?
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 39 - Nebraska 47 16:53 2nd Half
3 Huskers already in double digits. Only Ryan Anderson averages double digits for this team, and he’s not one of the three.
Brackins is frustrated, and this things is starting to get sloppy. Doc Sadler might be alright with that, but Mac needs to circle the wagons.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 36 - Nebraska 43 18:00 2nd Half
Nebraska remains just fine giving Diante Garrett three point opportunities.
Standhardinger, true freshman, gets his own offensive rebound over Brackins and Hamilton, and is subsequently fouled.
Crowd is totally out of it.
Even a Gilstrap dunk could only muster slight applause.

Iowa State 34 - Nebraska 41 Halftime
Key Stats:

Iowa State 34 - Nebraska 41 Halftime
When the cheerleaders are audible at the other end of the floor at the end of the half, I have to pinch myself to ensure I’m not on the links. I’m half expecting a putt to occur during some of these possessions.
Cyclone Alley fans have informed me they’re apathetic to the cause. Not a good sign.
Scattered boo’s coming down, along with scattered fight song sing-a-longs.
I need to get a helmet if this thing gets uglier, stuff might start raining down.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 30 - Nebraska 36 1:30 1st Half
Mac is finally giving the ref’s a little something, but quickly pulled away.
Nebraska is 6/11 from 3-point range, not exactly what Iowa State was hoping to see tonight. Brackins is still getting doubled every possession, teammates have to ensure that they make the open look pay off.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 28 - Nebraska 30 4:30 1st Half
I can’t tell if the emotion at Hilton is apathy or just being more scared to lose than excited to win.
Nebraska shooting 52%, Iowa State 48%.
A bit of inconsistent officiating, but what’s new? Fans are complaining about turnovers, but Huskers have four more calls than Cyclones do.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 23 - Nebraska 28 6:43 1st Half
I feel like I cannot understate how stagnant Hilton is right now. Maybe 9000 people here, you can hear it anytime anyone says anything. Anything at all.
All this anticipation without cheering has got to be setting up for something.
Iowa State has no idea how to defend 6-foot-8 German freshman Christian Standhardinger. 3-pointer in CB’s face, knocking down baskets in the lane.
Wake up.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 19 - Nebraska 21 9:00 1st Half
LaRon Dendy hit a free throw. And the crowd goes wild.
Mac trying to push the pace, but Nebraska is getting some open looks in the process.
Mac doesn’t seem to be protesting any calls tonight…very curious.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 11 - Nebraska 12 12:35 1st Half
Quick five points by the Cyclones. Don’t get used to that phrase too much.
Iowa State needed to do something to get the crowd up here, Hilton has been moving as much as a windless muddy pond.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 6 - Nebraska 12 13:55 1st Half
Huskers content to let Diante Garrett beat them. Brackins hasn’t been able to get good positioning in the post. Uh-oh. Doc Sadler always does his homework, but Iowa State could stand to get a few buckets and rebounds but toughening up.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 4 - Nebraska 8 1st Half
Couple of points in the paint by the Cyclones as Nebraska looks more comfortable getting looks early. Iowa State looks tentative. This Husker team stayed closer with Kansas than ISU did, McDermott’s team is going to have to make their own breaks.
Hilton maybe 2/3 full tonight…at least Cyclone Alley filled in a bit. 10 minutes to tip there were three rows filled on both sides.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State - Nebraska Team Introductions Commencing.
Awkward kid video comes on Jumbotron as Huskers run out to the floor.
Which thing are the fans booing?
Iowa State needs this more than Nebraska does folks. Fans would forgive rough patches against top competition if the Cyclones could turn in a couple wins against the bottom dwellers. Start joining the bottom dwellers? Things start to smell pretty bad, and Hilton Coliseum is loaded keen noses.
Also: Cyclone Alley members see frivolousness of poor props this season. My calls for new leaders have not gone unnoticed. They better bring the cheers tonight.
———————————————————————————–
12 Minutes To Tip
As full as the media parking lot was pre-game for this one, you’d expect a full house. On an ice cold night in Ames, it doesn’t appear that will be the case as the two last place teams in the Big 12 take the floor tonight to decide who sits in the cellar of the Midwest’s premier conference.
Nebraska will likely want to drag this game out and keep the score in the 20’s by halftime, and in the 50’s late in the game. If ISU can get the score higher than that and Craig Brackins can knock down more than his average 13 points per game against the Huskers in his career, we could be look at the first Cyclone victory in the month of February.
Starting Lineups:

Iowa State:

Iowa State is holding its own on defense, but is still having troubles finding a consistent offensive output. Garrett leads the Cyclones with 10 points.
Texas A&M 22, Iowa State 17
7:40, First Half
All of a sudden a burst of energy has been injected into Hilton. Iowa State drew within a point of the lead, before Donald Sloan nailed a jumper. But the crowd has begun to show signs of life. The Cyclones continue to rack up the hustle plays — scrambling for lose balls, playing tight on defense. Iowa State is getting good looks on offense, but hasn’t fully hit a groove yet.
Texas A&M 17, Iowa State 13
11:36, First Half
owa State is struggling to hold the Aggies in the post, but the Cyclones continue scrap their way into this game. Hamilton already has two fouls and is on the bench. Hold on a second. With Oklahoma State scoring only three points in the last five minutes, the Cyclones have made a bit of a comeback. Iowa State has scored the last 12 points.
Oklahoma State 36, Iowa State 22
3:00, First Half
A slight burst of energy has been shot into the crowd as the Cyclones have cut the Cowboys lead to 14. Scott Christopherson and the Cyclones have been cold from 3-point range (2-for-9), but it was a Christopherson three that led to this sudden burst of momentum.
Oklahoma State 33, Iowa State 15
6:32, First Half
Ugly. This game has gotten away from the Cyclones in a hurry. The Cowboys continue to shoot well with a 11-for-18 clip going. Oklahoma State has also hit six three pointers.
Oklahoma State 24, Iowa State 8
8:48, First Half
It has been more of the same from the Cyclones. Iowa State is shooting 3-for-12 from the field. Add to that seven turnovers and you get the current result.
Oklahoma State 14, Iowa State 6
12:10, First Half
The scoring has hit a stand still for the last several minutes, with the only points from either side coming from the free throw line. James Anderson leads the Cowboys with five points. Scott Christopherson leads the Cyclones with three.
Oklahoma State 13, Iowa State 5
14:37, First Half
After starting the game off by missing its first four shots, Iowa State finally got on the board with a 2-and-1 by Scott Christopherson. Iowa State is shooting a lowly 22 percent (2-for-9) from the field. Oklahoma State is already establishing its self on the boards, having grabbed seven rebounds to Iowa State’s one. The Cowboys have turned the ball over three times, but have found a shooting rhythm from the field (5-of-7).
—————————————————————————————–
Searching for an end to its four game losing streak, Iowa State is set to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Big 12 schedule has been plagued with troubles for the Cyclones so far this season. Iowa State is 2-8 in the conference and has lost seven of its last eight games.
Oklahoma State on the other hand has had mixed results this season, sitting at seventh in the conference with a 5-5 record. The Cowboys are fresh off a 97-76 thrashing of rival Oklahoma last Saturday. Junior guard James Anderson continues to be one of the Big 12’s top scoring threats, leading the conference in scoring with an average of 22.6 points per game.
Fans have been slow to fill the seats of Hilton Coliseum tonight, with many empty seats remaining 13 minutes before tip-off.

Iowa State Cyclones (13-12, 2-8) vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (17-7, 5-5)
——————————————————————————–
Iowa State 64 - Oklahoma State 69 Final
Right through the legs. This is an Iowa State ending, for a Cyclone team that just can’t win the close ones this year. Whether it be nerves, tired legs, or mental instability, something is working against this ball club, and Gilstrap and Brackins combining for a 5-for-27 shooting night exemplifies that.
Here’s to another weekend of Cyclone hoops with a better result.
The losing streak sits at five.
McDermott looked on the verge of a breakdown post-game, so hopefully he still has the kajones to rally the troops.
——————————————————————————–
Iowa State 60 - Oklahoma State 67 1:19 2nd Half
A late push by the Cyclones, but the Cowboys just proved their mettle to close the game. The Cyclones have proved they don’t have that strength yet, and Obi Muonelo exposed some of Marquis Gilstrap’s maladies on defense.
——————————————————————————–
Iowa State 55 - Oklahoma State 60 4:13 2nd Half
Tick tick tick. Iowa State isn’t getting baskets when it matters right now, but the crowd and their coach are still very much alive. CB is 3-for-16 from the field…ouch.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 52 - Oklahoma State 57 7:55 2nd Half
Scottie needs some help, as the Cowboys haven’t shown that they’ll back off of the double team on CB. Obi Muonelo is still cleaning up, and Iowa State will need some major crowd momentum and solid shooting down the stretch to regain a lead.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 50 - Oklahoma State 49 10:20 2nd Half
Dramatic throw of the sport coat and technical foul of Coach Mac. Boos from the crowd after a no-call on Craig Brackins. Mac argues and moans for his boys all the time, and I’d bet my studio apartment that he’d take more than one T for Brackins.
Anderson missed both free throws.
Hilton is as loud as it has been in weeks. I think there are cobwebs shaking.
Obi Muonelo is enjoying his spotlight as well. 19 points for the smooth shooting senior.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 50 - Oklahoma State 47 11:38 2nd Half
Iowa State lineup of Brackins, Garrett, Buckley, Colvin, and Dorr. Count me as a fan of this group.
Unfamiliar territory for ISU right now though, only one turnover since half, 10/12 from FT line, and six 3pt FG.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 47 - Oklahoma State 45 12:36 2nd Half
Scottie already has a career high, Obi Muonelo is enjoying his back and forth with the crowd, and the Cyclones have their first lead of the game.
It’s getting rowdy.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 45 - Oklahoma State 45 14:21 2nd Half
Simultaneous explosions at Hilton. The crowd just realized that the once 20 down Cyclones just tied the game, and OSU coach Travis Ford just met guard Keiton Page out at mid-court after calling a time out, and I don’t think he was telling him “good job”.
Crowd is in it, and there somehow isn’t a cloud of questioning going on, wondering when this team is going to let up. Vast change from previous weeks, maybe they just like surprises.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 39 - Oklahoma State 45 15:57 2nd Half
Obi Muonelo didn’t appreciate me giving the respect to Anderson, and pulled up twice and unquestionably took confident three pointers to give the Cowboys a little space.
McDermott needs to slow the pace down for these guys, and keep Scottie shooting from deep.
Crazy Asian kid from halftime throw just knocked down a meaningless fall-away three with an overhead tomahawk movement. Sign this kid up for something!!
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 37 - Oklahoma State 39 17:21 2nd Half
Question answered. Next thing for Iowa State, can they keep with Oklahoma State, even as James Anderson inevitably gets hot? Scott Christopherson is upping his total for the evening and Ham is making some solid hustle plays, even if his goatee hasn’t gotten any better.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 30 - Oklahoma State 37 20:00 2nd Half
Crowd trying to hang around for the 2nd half in this one, keep the Cyclones in it.
Which team will come out of the locker room?
1) The one that ended the first half on a 14-1 run
or
2) The one that let OSU start last year’s game on a 12-0 run after half
Wait and see.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 30 - Oklahoma State 37 Halftime
Interesting half by both teams, as the Cowboys couldn’t miss to start the half, and the Cyclones found some crazy momentum at the end of the half. Almost as crazy as the Asian kid tossing the ball 30 feet over the referees head after he caught it post-buzzer.
Halftime at Hilton Coliseum is a weird event in itself; cheerleaders sitting on the bench, stagnant crowd, and some ball room dancers going nuts in sequined outfits at mid-court. The guy on the end is the dude that wears shorts everywhere because he rides his bike in January! I didn’t even know that dude had pants. Fantastic.
Important Stats:
Iowa State ends half on 14-1 run.
OSU: James Anderson 15 points, Keiton Page 10 points
ISU: Scott Christopherson 11 points, Craig Brackins 2/8 FG, 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 30 - Oklahoma State 37 53.9 1st Half
Crowd is back into it here at Hilton, which is nice considering the hibernation effort the rest of this first half has seemed like. Cowboys looking a little rattled, good thing the halftime buzzer is around the bend.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 28 - Oklahoma State 36 1:28 1st Half
Cyclones are doing something right. Oklahoma State gone cold offensively, and Iowa State has to capitalize before half.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 22 - Oklahoma State 36 3:34 1st Half
This game got really exciting…if the Iowa State women’s team pulls one out at Nebraska without star do-it-all guard Alison Lacey, this men’s game in front of us gets a story and a 2nd angle. If they lose, the 2nd angle will be unnecessary as the Cyclone loss in Lincoln won’t be front page material. Our own Nate Sandell may be sweating as much as Greg McDermott.
In court action, the Cyclones have 8 turnovers and 8 made field goals. Slowly working their way back in…
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 18 - Oklahoma State 36 4:41 1st Half
Craig Brackins sighting; first points for the leading scorer at 6:15 mark of the first half. CB is still trying to lead the troops though, even if James Anderson doesn’t care.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 12 - Oklahoma State 30 7:12 1st Half
Marquis Gilstrap doesn’t want to be embarrassed, but the Cyclones defense is like poor kids’ clothing: nasty and full of holes.
Iowa State is understandably frustrated, but Oklahoma State isn’t having to work for baskets…not a good sign against a team knocking down 8 threes per game.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 8 - Oklahoma State 24 9:00 1st Half
5-foot-9 Keiton Page: 4/5 FG, 2/3 3pt, 10 pts
6-foot-10 Craig Brackins: 0/3 FG, 0 pts
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 6 - Oklahoma State 16 11:50 1st Half
Could Iowa State be turning into a football school? People at Hilton Coliseum love them some Paul Rhoads, and the team on the floor isn’t giving them too much to cheer about.
4 turnovers, 1 assist, 2/9 from the field, -4 rebound margin.
Coming out of the timeout, Mac needs a plan to get CB free off the double team, and the guards HAVE to hit shots.
This is looking like Baylor.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 6 - Oklahoma State 13 12:50 1st Half
Pace of this one is definitely in Iowa State’s favor, but a little scoring would be nice. Craig Brackins is 0/3 from the field.
———————————————————————————-
Tonight’s game was subject to blackout…that doesn’t happen often at Hilton Coliseum, and even though it isn’t close to full here tonight, there’s a decent turnout among the adult season ticket holders.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 5 - Oklahoma State 13 15:20 1st Half
Outrebounded, outshot, and out hustled to this point. The Cyclones started the game looking surprised to see a zone defense. Really?
Closing out on shooters would help, but so would a few fouls on James Anderson to send the hot shooter to the bench.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State - Oklahoma State Leading up to tip-off
Hilton is slowly filling in, but Cyclone Alley is still empty in the upper sections. Free handout for students tonight are hardhats, hope they came to work. With most fans keeping one eye on the action in front of them and their other eye on the No. 13 Cyclone women’s team on the road versus undefeated No. 3 Nebraska tonight, the gentlemen on the floor will need all the help they can get.
Starting Lineups:
Oklahoma State
G- Keiton Page 5′9″ So.
G- Fred Gulley 6′2″ Fr.
G- Obi Muonelo 6′5″ Sr.
G- James Anderson 6′6″ Jr.
F- Matt Pilgrim 6′8″ Jr.
Iowa State
G- Diante Garrett 6′4″ Jr.
G- Scott Christopherson 6′3″ So.
F- Marquis Gilstrap 6′7″ Sr.
F- Craig Brackins 6′10″ Jr.
C- Justin Hamilton 6′11″ So.
These are projected starters, but likely won’t change between now and tip, even if the sizes seem a little mismatched. Look for Muonelo on Brackins, Gilstrap on Anderson, and for god’s sake, somebody follow Keiton Page. The baby-faced-assasin is shooting 90% from the line, and knocking down three 3-pointers per contest in Big 12 play.

Another day, another game. (That lead is courtesy of my pal/boss Nate Sandell. Inspiring Nate, truly.)
The Cyclones welcome the Cowboys to Hilton Coliseum, and judging by the Cyclone Alley turnout, it may not be a full house. It seems like another game where Iowa State gets run off the floor by a quick group of guards, like the debacle at Baylor a few weeks ago, but…
Oklahoma State is vulnerable to shooting woes, and with the inside presence of the Cyclones, it could be close most of the way. Coach Travis Ford doesn’t have anyone on his bench to match up with Craig Brackins, and without even being a James Anderson vs. Craig Brackins type match-up up and down the floor, the Cowboys aren’t fond of defense either.
Interesting to see how this turns out, at least until halftime to see if the Cyclones can match up with the Runnin’ Jack-O-Lanterns.
Tip in 20 minutes!
In-game updates: Iowa State vs. Kansas State
Kansas State 79, Iowa State 75
FINAL
The Cyclones made a late run, but it was too little, too late. Craig Brackins ended the game with 29 points, but was outdone by Denis Clemente’s 30 point total, going 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Iowa State out-rebounded the Wildcats, but turned the ball over 12 times.
Kansas State 71, Iowa State 61
2:33 Second half
That should be close to icing it. Clemente hit another 3-pointer to put the lead back into double digits. Iowa State’s bench is filled with deflated looks, as they have watched another halftime lead slip away.
Kansas State 65, Iowa State 56
4:51, Second Half
Just when the Cyclones look like they were about to cut the lead to two, Kansas State scored two key baskets, including cashing in on a two-and-one.
Kansas State 60, Iowa State 54
6:15, Second Half
Brackins sank a lay-in while getting fouled and drained the free throw, bringing out whatever enthusiasm the crowd has left. Iowa State continues to miss several key rebounds that would have swung the momentum to the Cyclones.
Kansas State 60, Iowa State 51
7:46, Second Half
The Wildcats are in the bonus already and Iowa State is cashing in on the charity strike having drained 10 points from the line. Every time the Cyclones seem to be gaining momentum, Kansas State snatches it away with a key basket.
Kansas State 55, Iowa State 46
10:21 , Second Half
Craig Brackins scored his first basket since 7:26 in the first half. His struggles mirror his team’s, which has scored only 11 points this half. Kansas State continues to look strong, using Clemente and Pullen’s combined 31 points to maintain the lead.
Kansas State 48, Iowa State 39
14:43, Second Half
The flood gates have opened slightly and the Wildcats have pushed out to a nine point lead. Iowa State has not hit a basket since the 18:48 mark. The Cyclones look deprived of any momentum they had in the first half.
Kansas State 43, Iowa State 39
15:50, Second Half
With back to back three pointers, the Wildcats have regained the lead. Iowa State has gone cold from the floor, while the Wildcats have scored eight straight.
Iowa State 39, Kansas State 35
17:58, Second half
The Cyclones remain in the lead, but they have already gotten themselves into foul trouble. Hamilton and Gilstrap both have three fouls and the team is at three on the half.

Iowa State 35, Kansas State 31
HALFTIME
Believe it or not but Iowa State has taken a four point lead into the locker room against the No. 10 team in the nation. The Cyclones have survived a pair of scary moments when Craig Brackins and Marquis Gilstrap went down hard to the ground, but both stars have returned.
Brackins is Iowa State’s leading scorer with 14. Clemente is leading the Wildcats with 13.
Flash back to the Texas game earlier this season, when the Cyclones were holding their own against the Longhorns in the first half, only to see Texas go on an early second half run that ultimately iced the game. Iowa State will need for that to not happen if it wants to remain in this game.
Iowa State 32, Kansas State 28
54.7 seconds, First Half
Coach Greg McDermott was jumping up and down trying to pump up the crowd as the Cyclones have taken a four point lead from the Wildcats. Brackins went down grimacing in pain after getting his left ankle tangled in a scramble for a rebound. He left the game only to return minutes later.
Kansas State 25, Iowa State 25
3:46, First Half
Iowa State has finally pulled even with the Wildcats, thanks to Chris Colvin’s rebound work and game-tying basket. Brackins has been on the bench for the last several minutes, but the Cyclones have maintained the same amount of energy.
Kansas State 21, Iowa State 19
6:41, First Half
Craig Brackins let out a tribal scream after he slammed home an alley-opp pass from Diante Garrett, helping cut Kansas State’s lead to three. The crowd, which was relatively calm for most of the first half, have been rocked back to life by the dunk. Brackins has turned out 14 points this afternoon, while no other Cyclone has more than two points. Pullen leads the Wildcats with seven.
Kansas State 19, Iowa State 15
8:51, First Half
Both teams have missed opportunities from the field (the Cyclones are shooting 31.8 percent, the Wildcats are at 38.9) but Kansas State has started to open a bit of a lead on the Cyclones. Iowa State has yet to make a three (0-for-5), while the Wildcats have cashed in on two.
Kansas State 15, Iowa State 14
11:50, First Half
Iowa State is holding its own and has managed to keep themselves in a back and forth battle with Kansas State. Craig Brackins continues to fuel the Cyclones early on, having drained 10 points so far. Curtis Kelly and Denis Clemente each have five points for the Wildcats
Iowa State 4, Kansas State 3
17:50, First Half
Craig Brackins, who has struggled in weeks past adjusting to double team pressure, put the Cyclones on the board on the first drive down the court. Scott Christopherson followed with another shot from the field. Kansas State answered, however, with a three.
—————————————————————————————–
The Iowa State men, clad in pink jerseys and shoes in honor of breast cancer awareness, is only minutes away from a showdown with conference foe No. 10 Kansas State. The anticipation is starting to build in the student section, which is decked out in pink shirts as well.
Iowa State’s gauntlet conference schedule continues today as the team preps for the Wildcats. Kansas State has emerge this season as a power in the Big 12. At 18-4 on the year, the Wildcats are behind only Kansas and Texas in the conference standings. Kansas State is led by the dynamic guard duo of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente. Pullen is averaging 19 points per game, while Clemente has posted a 15 point average.
The Cyclones, who have battled setbacks all season, are trying to preserve their season. With a record of 13-9 and 2-5 in the Big 12, Iowa State must close this season on a serious win streak if the team wants to hold on to any hopes of post season play.

Iowa State Cyclones (13-9, 2-5) vs. No. 10 Kansas State Wildcats (18-4, 5-3)
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 75 - Kansas State 79 Final
A few desperation buckets made things look good in the end, but the Cyclones lost another one by coming out slow from the locker room in the second half, and not having enough offense to make up the difference.
Now 2-6 in the Big 12, the Cyclones have a long way to go to make this season palpable, and all hopes of postseason play that weren’t already floating away may have been crushed by mathematical probability.
The question moves onto the players themselves for the remainder of 2010 and beyond.
Does Greg McDermott rearrange his lineup to try something new? Does Craig Brackins consider coming back for another year in Ames because of his slumping NBA Draft Stock? Does the entire current roster stick around until next year, with the exception of Marquis Gilstrap.
These questions will eventually answer themselves, but Cyclone fans must simply find solace in the fact that they almost got the W. Again. Almost.
-
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 61 - Kansas State 72 1:55 2nd Half
Air is deflated, seats are slowly emptying. The leg crossing emotion and awkward silence at halftime proved true, as the Cyclones are watching another one slip through their fingers.
Denis Clemente hasn’t gotten much pub on the blog yet, but the guard has 28 points.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 56 - Kansas State 65 4:50 2nd Half
Wildcats are showing they’re clutch. Iowa State can’t say the same.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 56 - Kansas State 60 5:48 2nd Half
Definitely no snoozing in Hilton today, back and forth scoring. Iowa State can’t get consistent buckets, but they’re getting good runs, and Kansas State is scrapping for every ball.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 54 - Kansas State 60 6:42 2nd Half
I’ve figured out a great theme here. When Craig Brackins gets the ball in the post, Iowa State gets a good shot. Shocking.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 51 - Kansas State 60 7:46 2nd Half
Popular opinion probably would have rejected this idea pregame, but Greg McDermott is the coach doing the jumping and yelling. Kansas State’s Frank Martin has kept cool and composed, his hair as immovable as Stonehenge.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 49 - Kansas State 58 8:42 2nd Half
Cyclones need a rally, and quickly.
1/11 from 3 point range has to change. No shot at coming back without it.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 46 - Kansas State 55 11:04 2nd Half
Unintentional comedic moment of the day:
Two folks winning an autograph basketball up on the video board trying to smile, fans booing emphatically at a blown goaltending call, and Greg McDermott simultaneously yelling at the refs.
They just wanted their signed basketball.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 42 - Kansas State 53 12:48 2nd Half
5 turnovers by Iowa State in six minutes. KSU shooting 6/7 to start half. 19-5 since 2nd Half started.
Hilton is as flat as Columbus’ globe.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 39 - Kansas State 48 15:06 2nd Half
Two breakaway dunks as the Wildcats are exhibiting their force.
“Well, here we go. Might as well just bend over and take it.” -Cyclone Alley member.
Tough to find momentum when everyone in the arena is expecting a collapse.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 39 - Kansas State 43 16:00 2nd Half
Wildcat defensive pressure picking up, Iowa State needs a big play to get the crowd back to dictating the tempo.
Observations: Pullen changed his shoes at half.
Clemente is getting hot.
Craig Brackins is getting tired.
Not good things for ISU. Mostly because Pullen changed his shoes.
8-0 run by the Wildcats.
Uh-oh.
———————————————————————————
Iowa State 39 - Kansas State 35 18:26 2nd Half
Cyclones are holding the Wildcats to some tough shots, but now Gilstrap and Hamitlon join the walking wounded with three fouls a piece. The bench isn’t deep enough for this to happen this early.
Feels like Wrigley, with the fans expecting a collapse.
For Iowa State fans, they greet the elephants in the room.

Halftime Stats
FG%: ISU- 14/37 ; KSU- 11/36
Rebounds: ISU- 26 ; KSU- 24
Turnovers: ISU- 4 ; KSU- 3
–Key Players–
Iowa State: Craig Brackins- 7/15 FG, 14 points, 6 rebounds
Kansas State: Denis Clemente- 4/11 FG, 13 points, 3 assists
Get excited for the 2nd Half. If Iowa State can somehow hold the No. 10 team in the land under 35% shooting again, this thing could come down to the wire. Haven’t been this excited since the dance team got new uniforms.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 35 - Kansas State 31 Halftime
Very entertaining first half of basketball, no idea what to expect the rest of the way.
If Kansas State finds a shooting stroke, they could open up a lead. But Craig Brackins is showing some moxie, and looks like he wants to will Greg McDermott’s club to his first Top-25 win since getting to ISU.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 35 - Kansas State 29 22.4 Seconds 1st Half
Ron Burgundy will read anything on the teleprompter.
For chrissakes, who put a question mark on the script!
“Hilton Magic?”
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 32 - Kansas State 27 1:00 1st Half
For some reason, this doesn’t feel like a Texas “almost” fluke game. Iowa State is taking on Kansas State stat for stat.
Brackins went down with a tough roll on a dead ball, pumped up the crowd, and now Hilton is popping with energy.
You’d have thought Lazarus just made an appearance. He was only out for 45 seconds of game time, but if he can lead this team to win, the door will be busting off the cave.
Hustle plays by the Cyclones, they gotta stay healthy though.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 25 - Kansas State 25 3:52 1st Half
Kansas State is barely shooting 30% in this first half, and that will undoubtedly go up. But for right now, 2 points a piece from Gilstrap, Garrett, Dendy, Colvin, and Christopherson will have to aid CB.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 19 - Kansas State 21 5:50 1st Half
Ham is making some good hustle plays, but if this thing stays Craig Brackins against Kansas State, the Wildcats will pull away eventually.
CB has 14 of State’s 19, APB for his teammates.
———————————————————————————-
Iowa State 19 - Kansas State 21 6:57 1st Half
You can take down those “Missing” posters that have been fading in the last week.
Craig Brackins is definitely here.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 14 - Kansas State 15 11:50 1st Half
We’ve got ourselves a basketball game.
Both teams struggling from the field (ISU 37%, KSU 33%), but hustle plays on each end have gotta make the coaches happy. CB could still use some help.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State 10 - Kansas State 13 14:44 1st Half
CB already has 8 of the Cyclones’ 10, but they’re going to need to find some other forms of offense if they want to keep this pace.
Little bit quick for Mac’s squad, they won’t be able to go step for step with the Wildcats.
————————————————————————————
Iowa State 6 - Kansas State 8 16:11 1st Half
Not necessarily a trend quite yet, but Frank Martin seems content with single teaming Craig Brackins. CB is looking to make the Wildcats pay.
Wildcats are stroking from the field, taking easy shots on open jumpers.
Both teams may want to re-assess their defenses.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State - Kansas State 20:00 1st Half
Plenty of energy in Hilton today, very unlike the Colorado game last weekend.
Mac is doing a last second interview with ESPN nameless reporter.
As expected, it’s very bright. Pulling out my Rainbow Brite shades from last week.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State coming down through the north end of Cyclone Alley among the crowd among the mass of pink, pretty cool scene as the squad emerges.
A few last pregame observations…
1. These colors are going to drive me nuts. Iowa State is in white uniforms with pink outlines, and Kansas State is wearing their road blacks with purple outline. Gah.
2. The Wildcats are really big.
3. Pullen and Clemente are rocking the new Kobe V’s, mid-level shoe that looks pretty slick.
4. Highly touted signee Melvin Ejim is seated in the first row behind us, looks to be a legit 6′7″.
5. The Wildcats are really athletic.
6. Mac’s got on the pink shoes like the players. Very good look.
7. Frank Martin is really scary.
Cyclones are going to need to come out hot to keep the crowd in this thing, it could be an interesting Saturday afternoon.
Tipoff momentarily after shaggy lonely child exits locker room in the introduction video.
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State Starters:
Diante Garrett, Scott Christopherson, Marquis Gilstrap, Craig Brackins, Justin Hamilton
ISU Player to Watch - Scott Christopherson, 6-3 So., 7.1 ppg, 50% 3pt FG
Christopherson has been the most consistent outside shooter for the Cyclones since Lucca Staiger’s departure, but the six points a game he’s scoring in conference play isn’t going to get it done. He will need to combine his best defensive effort against Pullen and Clemente with his best offensive effort, taking pressure off Brackins if the Cyclones are going to have a shot.
Kansas State Starters:
Denis Clemente, Jacob Pullen, Dominique Sutton, Curtis Kelly, Luis Colon
KSU Player to Watch - Jamar Samuels, 6-7 So., 12 ppg, 5.1 rpg
Samuels is coach Frank Martin’s super sub, coming from the pine to 12 points per contest. Iowa State’s weakness has been a lack of scoring and depth, and if Samuels can exploit a tired Marquis Gilstrap and get to the basket, it could be a long day for the Cyclones as the Wildcats pull up a firm chair at the free throw line.
5 Minutes to Tip!
———————————————————————————–
Iowa State vs. No. 10 Kansas State 15 minutes to tip
Cyclone Alley is decked out in pink shirts, pink is scattered among the crowd, the rosy hue is on Cyclone footwear and warmups, and even the student managers are wearing Nike pink polo shirts.
Hilton’s red interior makes this thing look like a kindergarten Valentine’s Day party, but fortunately Kansas State’s purple makes these two teams look like the Powder Puff Girls in shootaround.

Cyclones sport pink on Saturday

Iowa State will set aside its Cardinal and Gold threads this weekend, and instead don pink jerseys and shoes. The promotion, sponsored by Nike, is meant to raise Breast Cancer awareness. Breast Cancer awareness is especially important to coach Greg McDermott, whose wife, Theresa, has battled the disease for the last couple of years, but the disease is currently in remission.
“She’s doing great, but part of the reason she’s doing great is because her cancer was detected early,” McDermott said. “And that’s what’s this is really about. It’s about awareness and it’s about people knowing that they have to be proactive with their health.”
Iowa State’s student section, Cyclone Alley, will join the team by giving out pink t-shirts to Cyclone Alley members.
Brigham Young, Illinois and Oregon will also be wearing pink jerseys this weekend.
